The 140,000 sf, MIRAE VENTURE office building in Seoul, Korea. The sleek, inflected facade and urban

amphitheater naturally draw visitors into the building.

The Millbrook pool house in upstate New York. A formal approach where the interaction of simple volumes results

in rich interior space. The vernacular style of the house is a foil for the modern open spaces within and the high-tech solar system that heats the house in

the winter and the pool in the summer.

Horatio St. Loft in the West Village transforms an old stable into a unique living space. The glowing, central media library infuses

the apartment with light and becomes the heart of this capacious loft.

Two brownstones in Ft. Greene will be completed in the next two months. Although quite different, both projects offer a unique

re-programming of space that allows the standard brownstone typology to work for each client. Bold color and the juxtaposition of the old with

the new are our signature design strategies.

We redistributed the 2100 square feet of the pre-existing one-story garage into a dynamic two-story house with a central garden. The result is a variety of private space with a catwalk connecting the 2nd floor bedroom, stair, and rear roof deck.

A loft in the West Village transforms an old stable into a unique living space. Almost a square, with windows on two sides, the loft presents all the usual difficulties in regards to light and air.

Our solution was to insert a glowing cube or “lantern” that warms and centers the space. This intimate media library serves to contrast and balance the capaciousness of the loft.

This house fits in with a compound of 19thC American-style houses upstate, but the space is contemporary, with a dramatic “great room” and generous glazing. The solar array recently heated water to 165degreesF on a 50degreeF day!

Our architect-developer team won a competition to build this 10-story office building in a new, high-tech business district in Seoul, Korea. The site is a newly planned area, so the future context is unknown. The design is the result of a strict zoning mass, where the articulation of the envelope generates the building’s expression. The east facade adjoins a public promenade. An urban amphitheater draws the public into the building, which is inflected to create the amphitheater space. This east facade becomes a sleek, seamless glass curtain wall, a display with embedded LED video display oriented toward this public side, as if a virtual space were opened in the facade. By contrast the north and south facades express the actual, inhabited space inside. This space is bounded by construction technology that has not changed much in 80 years, concrete floor slabs. Here the articulation is in the modulation of the depth of the facade glazing, the location of the panels in space. Balconies, formed where the glass is recessed, bring building inhabitants to the facade. Here the building displays its occupation while the occupants may experience fresh air and views.

In collaboration with MASDesign, Local Projects, and ORG – linked to masdesigned.com, localprojects.net, and o-r-g.comStoryCorps, modeled after the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of the 1930′s, through which oral-history interviews with everyday Americans across the country were recorded, is a national project to instruct and inspire people to record each others’ stories in sound. Mesh conceived a soundproof, mobile recording studio. It appears bright and engineered on the outside to let you know it is technologically advanced, packed with digital equipment. But the inside is warm, almost domestic in tone to help interlocutors feel comfortable. The outside is also a display, telling StoryCorps’s story and inviting passersby to listen to some of the stories.

The duplex loft starts from the concept of a loft as a microcosmic urban space, an oversized setting for activities and events. By creating loosely connected zones with varied environments, the home becomes a dynamic setting for exploration and concentration. Small LCD screens throughout the space, embedded in walls, furniture, and cabinetry, provide access to the Home Operating System, a web-based home control and communication system. This system is not only internal – it connects the micro-urban space of the loft out to the electronic urban space of the Web. This exterior-viewless home becomes at once an inward-focused sanctuary and an active site for mediated connection to the outside world.

Launched in Rockefeller Plaza and proceeding to a multi-city tour, this booth represents the new standard for the advertising industry, focused on consumer participation. Visitors enter the booth to record video testimony of their experiences flying JetBlue. The best stories are used in TV commercials and on the Web. The booth incorporates a full LED video display, LED-backlit composite graphic panel sides, and a full interactive, chromakey video recording system.

DMC E-2-1 block, Seoul, Korea, 10/07 47,982m2 The Multi Contents Center is an office building for a consortium of media companies in Seoul’s Digital Media City (DMC), a visionary, high-concept office park. MESH’s winning competition entry, designed in collaboration with Gansam Partners, takes on two challenges: (1) programmatic demands for a publicly programmed podium and a private, set-back office tower and (2) staging a large-scale interaction with digital media in and around the podium. The podium and tower have conflicting agendas, as the tower is optimized for office layout and light while the podium must engage the street and house large-scale public programs. We present the podium as a light, media element and float it off the ground. It is dense with display and interaction with media of the tenant companies. Folding this media space upon itself defines a Media Terrace, an immersive space. We render digital media as physical space and physical events as media display.

This pavilion was originally installed in the temporary WTC PATH station.  It was designed to be disassembled and re-installed in Foley Square without damaging components or wasting materials.

On the occasion of the randomaccessmemory.org launch, MESH created a physical interface to the RAM database, to encourage an experience with the data different from that at home using the web. What makes a space feel different, expanded, connected to someplace else? What if we have to physically move to find different data? How does that change our perception of the space? There are thousands of stories within, powerful true accounts from peoples memories. In the sliding screen interface you can click a word on the touchscreen to find memories containing that word. The memories are retrieved and laid out chronologically and virtually along the 20ft track, which you browse by walking. We display the memories not as paragraphs as on the site, but through RSVP, a method of displaying text sequentially, one word at a time. The words flash, but if you stop and focus on one of the streams, cognition clicks, and suddenly you enter another space created by the story. Perhaps this inspires recall of your own memories, after all much of the interest is in association, what causes us to store and retrieve. In the back you relax and enter your own memories at the suspended memory bench. There are links between the site and the show, the most recent memory from the Web is shown on screen, and a recent webcam photo is on the web site. The canopy is illuminated by color-changing LEDs. Three layers of images: cyan=places, magenta=people, yellow=objects. Images fade in and out of visibility as the lights crossfade, creating an animated, atmospheric backdrop and shelter. The structure does not touch the ground. Everything is suspended, with 12 bolts anchoring the struts into the walls on the gallery side. The other ends of the struts rest against the building, so the entire structure is effectively wedged between the two buildings, hanging the tracks and benches.

This house in Cobble Hill was a run-down, 3-family affair. MESH designed a complete renovation, preserving some elements while bringing kitchen and baths to modern standards. Historic and contemporary coexist harmoniously.

Owners who wanted a loft bought a Victorian-style Park Slope house. The challenge was to open the house to space and light without neutering its character. This is accomplished with two related gestures: First, open the parlor floor as a large open space for family living. We removed the central wall and redistributed its load to the party walls. Then open a zone through the middle of the house that ascends to a large skylight, to bring light down and animate the central circulation. In this zone, finishes are translucent panels or peeled back to reveal the old structure. Lighting in the zone is by pipe lights, designed and fabricated by MESH. The resulting configuration is consistent with contemporary family life but does not erase the original structures. Instead a layered, more complex spatial composition balances gravity with lightness, old with new, raw with finished.

Ten Times was called on to launch an interactive web experience for Imperial Woodpecker, an exciting new production company recently founded by director Stacy Wall and producer Doug Halbert. The Ten Times approach features an intuitive interface with a navigation that recedes into the background allowing video content to take center stage. Ten Times hopes to assist Imperial Woodpecker in their lofty ambitions of producing the last ever TV commercial. A tongue in cheek testament to the evolving media landscape.

Dumbospace is a new theatre space in the heart of a neighborhood filled with art and music, aiming to become a exciting new center as well as a defining community experience. The project means a complete restoration of an old warehouse with an extensive reconfiguration for an acoustically superior stage and recording facilities. Seating a total of more than 200, the venue promises to become an important focus for performance. Additionally, part of the creation of multiple residential units on the upper floors will include an entirely new floor. Dumbospace promises to be a spectacular new beacon for the arts in the dynamic Brooklyn district, harmonizing both architectural and technical as a platform for experimentation and creation.
